Jews and Arabs Share Recent Ancestry
Nadene Goldfoot
THE OLD JACOB AND ESAU FIGHT CAME AROUND: WE'RE FIGHTING OUR COUSINSJacob and Esau were Fraternal twins, sons of Isaac who was the son of Abraham. This goes back to the 2nd millennium BCE, a good 3,000 years ago. They were very different and even got into such a fight that Jacob left the homestead and didn't meet up with his twin until about 20 years later and came prepared with presents to hope their disagreements would be forgiven and they could make amends. Jacob went on to be the father of 12 sons, who were the fathers of the 12 Tribes of Israel (Jacob's name after an out of body experience) changed to Israel.)
It's like Jacob was wrestling with his own soul in what must be doneIsrael has a meaning; that of 'God Contended', 'Wrestles with God', 'Triumphant with God.' To live through that experience, no wonder he was given this name.
Today, 3,000 some years later, we Jews have returned to our homestead, Israel and find it was not easy. We had to fight our cousins, the Arabs, to do so. As it turns out, 73 years later, DNA testing has shown that the Arabs indeed are our very own distant cousins. Michael Hammer was the chief geneticist on this case and praised the new study for "focusing in detail on the Jewish and Palestinian populations." They found that
Jews and Arabs Share Recent Ancestry.
This is a revelation. Up until now, tests were not conclusive, and were even discouraging such an idea. Others were found to be closer, like the Kurds.
My father and his line of males had the Y haplogroup DNA test and were found to have the tag of QBZ67. Other Jewish men were also carrying the Q1 line, but not a great many. The more common finding was that of the Cohen gene of J1/M267. which many Arabs also carry. Come to find out, there are other Arabs carrying Q1 as well including the Bedouins. Our original finding was that Q1 originated in Siberia, parts of Turkey and migrated toward the Middle East. Many Native Americans of North and South America bear this tag. Somewhere, we broke off from them to enter the Middle East instead.
Seven Y chromosome major branches (E3b, G, J1, J2, Q, R1a1, and R1b) that are prevalent among Ashkenazi Jews account for 80 % or more of the total (Behar et al. 2004). Four of these (E3b, G, J1, J2, Q) were part of the ancestral gene pool transmitted by Jews who migrated from the Middle East, whereas R1b and certain sublineages within R1a may have entered the Ashkenazi Jewish population in Europe.
Esau and Jacob talking it overThis new finding about Jews and Arabs being related was told by Ann Gibbons in a science journal/magazine 21 years ago so its not new to the field of science. The study called it being closely related since it only happened within the last few thousand years ago. Too bad it wasn't disclosed on LOOK or LIFE MAGAZINE.
The results match historical accounts that some Moslem Arabs are descended from Christians and Jews who lived in the southern Levant, a region that includes Israel and the Sinai. They were descendants of a core population that lived in the area since prehistoric times. In a recent study of 1,371 men from around the world, geneticist, Michael Hammer of the University of Arizona in Tucson, found that the Y chromosome in Middle Eastern Arabs was almost indistinguishable from that of Jews!
Geneticist Ariella Oppenheim of Hebrew University in Jerusalem, who collaborated on the earlier study, focused on Arab and Jewish men. Her team examined the Y chromosomes of 119 Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews and 143 Israeli and Palestinian Arabs. many of the Jewish subjects were descended from ancestors who presumably originated in the Levant but dispersed throughout the world before returning to Israel (those taken to Rome in 70 CE maybe?) or( traders even a little earlier??) in the past few generations (1881 Aliyote?).
Most of the Arab subjects could trace their ancestry to men who had lived in the region for centuries or longer. The Y chromosomes of many of the men had key segments of DNA that were so similar that they clustered into just 3 of many groups known as haplogroups. other short segments of DNA called microsatellites were similar enough to reveal that the men must have had common ancestors within the past several thousand years. The study, reported at the Human Origins and Disease conference, will appear in an upcoming issue of Human Genetics.
Oppenheimer's team found, for example, that Jews have mixed more with European population which makes sense because some of them lived in Europe during the last millennium.

Oppenheim or Oppenheimer Connection from Lithuania to South African and American Jews Including Us
Nadene Goldfoot
I've been reading the book, Heshel's Kingdom by Dan Jacobson about his Lithuanian family and grandfather, Rabbi Heshel Melamed of Lithuania who's father-in-law and the author's great-grandfather, Zvi Yakov Opppenheim. The book tells of intimate details about Lithuania, even mentions Telz, which is also spelled as Telsiai, where our Goldfus/foots were from.
On our family tree, we have many Oppenheims and Oppenheimers on our Telsiai branch of the tree. The Oster line that has married into our line also has many Oppenheimers on it. We are related by DNA to the Oster line even though we have no connection from eastern Europe. It must have happened while both were Jews in Germany at the beginning of our German experience of becoming Ashkenazim and must have been quite close at one time being our closeness now.
On Family Tree DNA, I myself have 8 matches with Oppenheim. One is a 3rd cousin; 2 are 4th cousins and 5 are 5th cousins. The 3rd cousin is female, S. Oppenheim which could be a married name, so a man would be Dr. R. Oppenheimer on my father's side with the icon, 4th cousin. I match Dr R.O. on chromosome #7 with my brother, and Ian; on #10 with myself, David, Ian and Sandra, and #14 with myself, David. With another set of people, I see that chromosome #18 had a female 5th cousin A Oppenheimer match David, Myself and 3rd cousin Mrs. Andi Z with a small segment. I'm going by the color coding chart with is easy to use 7 people at one time to check on matching.
OPPENHEIM, town in Germany. Jews are first mentioned there in the tax register of 1241, according to which they were obliged to pay the emperor an annual tax of 15 marks. The Jews of the town, legally the property of the emperor, were placed under the protection of the officers in charge of the local fortress, to whom they paid their taxes. They also paid a house tax to the archbishop of Mainz. *Rudolf of Hapsburg and other kings gave letters of credit to various noblemen which were to be defrayed from the taxes paid by the Jews of Oppenheim; at times, they also leased these taxes. The burden of their taxes appears to have caused several Jews of Oppenheim to join the group that fled from the Rhineland and, under the leadership of *Meir b. Baruch of Rothenburg, attempted to emigrate to Ereẓ Israel (1285). At the end of July 1349, during the persecutions that followed the *Black Death, most of the Jews of Oppenheim were murdered, while others chose martyrdom (*kiddush ha-Shem) and burned themselves to death in order to escape forced conversion at the hands of the mob. Among the martyrs was the rabbi Joel ha-Kohen. (more info in resource), below.)

Romania-Lithuania Home For Our 4th Cousin: Origins of Our Y Haplogroup
We have a 4th cousin with the very same Y haplogroup as our Goldfoot line of QBZ67, but the ancestor is from Romania and not Lithuania or Poland which are in the Pale of Settlement. So at 4th level of cousins, tested through FTNDA, that is quite a stretch in time and geography. It's much closer to Turkey and the Seljaq Turks, the Turks of the Ottoman Empire who controlled the Middle East for 400 years, losing it only at the end of WWI.
I also note that another DNA cousin with ancestors from Latvia, is a neighbor of Lithuania. We've had DNA cousins from Belarus and Ukraine as well and those countries are part of the Pale. The Pale was controlled by Russia through Catherine II until the end of WWI in 1917.
The interesting thing is that his ancestor and our ggrandfather, Movsha ben Josel b: 1836, were distillers. His manufacturing of alcohol spirits in the USA and ours listed as a distiller-the maker of alcohol. So occupations were the same.
He also is 4th cousin to our 2nd to 3rd cousin, Ian Goldfoot whose family had gone to South Africa whereas our grandfather opted for the USA and they parted company .
Update: By using my brother's ancient origins map, I see that he originated out of Georgia which is or was part of Russia from the area around Tbillsi up north to Smolensk and then westward to Poland, and onto the Czech Republic area and finally into Germany where our Ashkenazim came from. The Yamnaya people was mentioned who brought in horses instead of Anatolia of a language group.
We are related to Rabbi Samson Wertheimer b: 1658 in Worms, Germany and died 1724 in Vienna, Austria, as found in the FTDNA group we matched with-the Halpern group, and he was the nephew of Rabbi Samuel Oppenheimer b: 1630 probably also born in Worms but the first to settle in Vienna after the 1670 expulsion of Jews. He died in 1703. . They both were philanthropists and Court Jews. Court Jews were involved with banks and were able to loan heads of state money. . I see that on the colored Q chart of the FTDNA's Q group, a Jehuda Lob Oppenheimer b: 1430 was a QBZ37. He lived in Worms, Germany, which was the center of the Ashkenazim Rabbis where RASHI would also have been. This group connects to RASHI and he in turn connects to King David of Israel.

Connecting to Wertheimer and Oppenheimer Through Life in Germany
Nadene Goldfoot

| Oppenheim, Germany |
The town is a well-known wine center, being the home of the German Winegrowing Museum, and is particularly known for the wines from the Oppenheimer Krötenbrunnen vineyards. However, to Jews of today, it is known for other reasons. We have to remember our history of being forced to become moneylenders because no other profession was allowed by the countries we were living in. It was also a profession that Jews excelled in from experience on the Silk Road trading in the Orient. Wherever Jews lived, whether it was in Europe or the Middle East where they were 2nd class citizens called dhimmis, they had to pay more taxes than the native population because they were Jews. For this reason alone they had to be good at handling their own money so they could live.
Baruch of Rothenburg, attempted to emigrate to Eretz Israel (1285).
Some time later the community was reestablished. After 1400 the right of residence was made renewable at the end of every six years, and the amount of taxes to be paid was fixed. In 1422 a plot by two Christians to kill the Jews of the town was frustrated by the municipal council. Certain protection fees and "gifts" that the Jews of Oppenheim were compelled to pay weighed upon them so heavily that despite the additional support of such communities as Worms, Mainz, and Frankfurt, Oppenheim Jewry could not meet their payments and were therefore penalized (1444). In 1456, R. Seligmann Bing (or R. Seligmann Oppenheim) attempted to establish a union of the communities of the Upper Rhine, but because of community opposition and that of R. Israel Isserlein (c. 1390–1460), the project was abandoned.
Rabbi Samson Wertheimer born in 1658 in Worms, Germany at a time when it was part of the Holy Roman Empire and died in 1724 in Vienna, Austria after being a court financier. His uncle was Samuel Oppenheimer. The bank they both worked in that Samuel had established was in Vienna. Samson and his son had lent large sums of money to the emperor. In 1719 he became the Chief Rabbi of Hungary and also of Moravia. He also was the rabbi of Eisenstadt, Austria where Joseph Haydn lived.
His uncle, Samuel Oppenheimer, was born in 1630 and died in 1703. He was a philanthropist and Court Jew. Jews had been expulsed from Vienna in 1670 , but he was the first Jew to resettle after that. He had become Leopold I's agent and financier, helping to finance his wars with the Turks and the War of the Spanish Succession. Another nephew of Samuel Oppenheimer was David Oppenheim/Oppenheimer born 1664 also born in Worms, Germany and had become a Rabbi. He served as rabbi in Nikolsburg, and from 1702, in Prague. He had built a library of books that was very valuable, and because of the censorship in Prague, had to keep them in Hanover, Germany. Much later in 1829 they were transferred to the Bodleian Library Oxford serving as the basis of its Hebrew section.
The ridiculous happened in 1697. This was when he was accused of conspiring to murder his nephew, who others saw as his rival, Rabbi Samson Wertheimer. He was even put into prison until he was vindicated. Samuel Openheimer was known to be a man who supported the poor liberally, Jewish scholars, and even Judah Hasid's movement to settle in Palestine-the return to Israel. So evidently Zionism started then.
For people studying their genealogy, I am one who has found that my family shares a DNA connection that leads to Rabbi Wertheimer. In fact, I was told that two paths lead to him. He in turn kept a genealogy that led him to RASHI, the famous biblical commentator whose comments are found in most all Jewish prayer books. Rashi had his genealogy that led him to King David. The family genealogy of Wertheimer: a line of it is below:
at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~prohel/names/wertheimer/wertheimer.html.
Rabbi Samson WERTHEIM (WERTHEIMER) Born: Jan 17, 1658 Died: Aug 6, 1724 in Vienna. Landesrabbiner + Veronica "Frumet" (see BRILIN family)Born: Mar 15, 1658/9 Died: Apr 24, 1715/18 in Vienna Father: rabbi Isaak Brilin (Brüll) (Worms? - 3/17/1678 Mannheim bur. Worms, Germany) Mother: Sorle (Sarlan, Sara, Serle) Oppenheim/er (Wolf) (Worms, Germany - 3/3/1673 Worms or Mannheim, Germany)
By the marriages of his children, Wertheimer became connected with the most prominent families of Austria and Germany. His stepson, Isaac Nathan Oppenheimer, married a daughter of the wealthy purveyor Pösing; his eldest son, Wolf, married a daughter of Emanuel Oppenheimer.
Wertheimer's first son was Wolf Wertheimer who suffered a reversal of his father's fortune. "Samson's second son, Löb, married a daughter of Issachar ha-Levi Bermann of Halberstadt, a relative of Leffman Behrens, court Jew of Hanover; thus the three great "shetadlanin" were closely connected. Samson's sons-in-law were: R. Moses Kann of Frankfurt-on-the-Main; Issacbar Berush Eskeles, father of the Vienna banker Bernhard Eskeles; Joseph, son of R. David Oppenheimer; and Seligmann Berend Kohn, called Solomon of Hamburg. His youngest son, Joseph Josel (b. 1718), married a daughter of his stepbrother Wolf. Joseph died in Vienna (1761), where he was reportedly greatly esteemed for his charity and Talmudic learning.
The community suffered during the wars of Louis XIV, and by 1674 only three families remained in the town. By 1722 the number had grown to eight. Many Oppenheim Jews settled in Frankfurt and other south German cities, where they were known as "Oppenheim" or "Oppenheimer," and the name became widespread. Joseph Ben Issachar Susskind Oppenheimer was born in 1698. He was known as Joseph Suss or Jud Suss. He was a financier. This is because Jews were kept out of most all other professions, and since in Christianity, gentiles were not allowed to lend money, it became the undesirable but needy profession that was open to Jews. It was Carl Alexander of Wurttemberg who appointed Joseph as his finance minister in 1732. Joseph endeavored to consolidate the duchy's finances and free its ruler from dependence on grant from the estates. His modern financial methods aroused much opposition. After the death of the duke in 1737, he was accused of embezzling state finances and was hung in Stuttgart, supposedly for having sexual relations with Christian women. He refused to save his life by accepting baptism.
I wonder if President Trump ever read about him at his Wharton School of Finance in Pennsylvania because Oppenheimer's career, ahead of its time, is the subject of many books. A novel was even written about him by Lion Feuchtwanger, titled JEW SUSS, written in German.
The community numbered 20 families in 1807; 257 in 1872; 189 in 1880; and 56 in 1933. Of the 17 Jews who remained during World War II, 16 were deported. In 1970 no Jews lived in Oppenheim. A memorial plaque commemorates the destroyed synagogue and the Oppenheim Jews who were victims of the Holocaust. The municipality organized two meetings of "Oppenheims" and "Oppenheimers" in 2000 and 2003."

In 1697, Oppenheimer was accused of the unthinkable; conspiring to murder his rival, Uncle Samson Wertheimer, so he was imprisoned until vindicated. He was a man who liberally supported the poor Jewish scholars, and also Judah Hasid's movement to settle in Palestine.
We have Oppenheim on our tree, but also know that we are connected to Rabbi Samson Wertheimer by DNA testing using triangulation of other matches. Our surname in Telsiai, Lithuania was Goldfus.

On Family Tree DNA's familyfinder test (autosomal) , I found I share segments from our 23 chromosomes with: Oppenheim on our tree shown above but have no Wertheimers on my tree as yet.
Familyfinder test: that I am connected to 3 Oppenheims and one Oppenheimer.
..... that I am connected to 4 Wertheimers
Familyfinder Test of my brother: 1 Oppenheim and 1 Oppenheimer, different from my matches
..... of my brother: 1 Wertheimer- I match and 1 Wertheimer I don't match.
Familyfinder Test of our 1st cousin-daughter of our father's sister: 4 Oppenheim-(2 matching mine, 1 matching my brother's, and 1 Oppenheimer not matching ours).
.....of my 1st cousin: 6 Wertheimers-(1 I match, same 2 that David matches,)
There was a Rabbi David Oppenheim (or Oppenheimer) b: 1664 d: 1736, nephew of Samuel Oppenheimer.
He was born in Worms, Germany and served as rabbi in Nikelsburg, and from 1702, in Prague. He built up a library of books and expended enormous sums on their acquisition, but, because of the censorship in Prague, kept them in Hanover, Germany. The Bodleian Library Oxford purchased his collection in 1829, and it served as the basis of its Hebrew sections.
There are many descendants of these Oppenheims, Oppenheimers and Wertheimers. One way to check if they are related is through their Y haplogroup (male line).
I found some of our Oppenheim/Oppenheimers' Y haplogroups were : J, or R's
Some of the Wertheimers were J or E's. Not all had been tested.
